1st June 2010 - Katherine to Jabiru in Kakadu NP

Distance travelled: 399
Cumulative distance: 11101

Packed up the bikes and went to the Terrace restaurant in town for breakfast. Met a couple of bikers who were riding BMW 800s from Melbourne. They had been having all sorts of trouble with the bikes. One had shredded his back tyre and the other had leaky oil and water pumps. BMW assist came to the rescue and had the bike with the faulty tyre towed to Katherine. We eventually got going at 9.30am and headed for Jabiru in the Kakadu National Park. The ride was only 300kms so we had plenty of time. The countryside was very lush and green due to the recent rain. We decided to stay in Jabiru instead of heading out to Border Store 40kms away. We checked into our bush cabin similar to the one at Lake Argyle except it included private toilet and shower in a separate building. We have a barbecue beside the room so we will be having a barbecue tonight. In the afternoon we went to Obiri rocks some 40kms away and saw a lot of aboriginal rock art. There was a fantastic lookout with view over the flood plains of the East Alligator river. It was very picturesque and I think I managed to take a video of it. A park ranger gave a talk on aboriginal kinship and how the complex interrelationships exist between aboriginals within each tribe. The local aboriginals are doing a bit of burning off before it gets too dry. They do this to promote new growth of different grasses etc. The road out to Obiri had a couple of water crossings from overflowing creeks. The water was only a couple of inches deep but we took some photos/video that made it look deeper. There was a road to Arnhemland that was closed at Caroll's crossing. We checked it out and found it was closed as there was a lot of water flowing over the causeway. There was a 4WD upside down downstream from the causeway. It had obviously come a cropper when it had tried to cross over. There are a lot of restrictions on the supply of alcohol in the NT. We couldn't buy any beer to take back to our room so we went to a local sports club and had a couple of "cold ones". It is quite warm during the day around 34C but it cools down in the evening. Unfortunately the mozzies come out to play then and try to carry you away.
